Additional costs

Fees and finance

As part of your course, there may be additional costs to consider that are not included in your tuition fees. Most of these will be optional, but some courses have essential additional costs.

General additional costs

Below you'll find examples of where you might incur extra costs during your studies. There may be additional optional opportunities offered on or outside of your course which are not included below. You can view our full policy on additional costs on the student contracts webpage.

Most costs in addition to your tuition fees are optional. There are a small number of courses that will have essential additional costs which will be clearly identified. Where applicable, any course specific costs are outlined further down on this page. All costs are optional unless highlighted as essential in the table.

Living costs

Whilst studying, you will need to budget for your living costs separately. Living costs include accommodation, food, bills and daily travel. For help with the cost of living, view our support hub.

Books, stationery and printing

You'll be able to access essential reading materials in hard or electronic copy, via open access or uploaded to Blackboard by tutors. You may incur additional costs for optional reading or texts you choose to purchase.

Library fines and charges

Books are automatically renewed for up to 26 weeks depending on whether someone else places a reservation request. Costs include:

Digital equipment

Although not essential for most campus-taught courses, you may wish to invest in a personal laptop or computer. This will allow you to conduct studies more independently. There are computers available for student use at all our campuses.

Examinations and assessments

You might need to apply for extenuating circumstances relating to assessments. There may be a cost to obtaining medical or other evidence to support your application. For example, a medical certificate could cost from £10.

Placements and volunteering

Courses with mandatory placements will have travel costs. You can claim towards these costs but the full cost will not be covered. The price will vary depending on the distance travelled and your mode of transport.

International travel

You may need to pay for international travel for volunteering or other experiences. This could include travel, accommodation and subsistence. The amount will vary depending on the country visited. Some courses offer a payment towards international travel.

Courses with additional costs

Most costs in addition to your tuition fees are optional. There are a small number of courses that will have essential additional costs.

All costs are optional unless highlighted as essential in the sections below.
