Major Collaborations
Our research includes the following broad collaborations:
- We have been instrumental in leading the UK involvement in the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) - the UK SALT Consortium. SALT is the largest southern-hemisphere optical telescope, and the JHI has privileged access.
- We are a member of the COSMOS Consortium (www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/cosmos/), the UK's National Cosmology Supercomputer.
- We are a founding partner in the Commonwealth Cosmology Initiative (CCI - www.thecci.org), an Australia-UK project (Sydney, ANU, Swinburne, UCLan, Oxford and Cambridge) aimed at increasing awareness and facilitating high-performance computational cosmology collaborations.
- We are a member of the European SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) Instrument consortium for the ESA/JAXA's next generation infrared space observatory SPICA.
- We are co-investigators of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (ATLAS), the largest Open Time Key Project of the Herschel Space Observatory that will provide the first wide-field blind survey in the far-infrared/submm.
- We are a partner in the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE - www.aip.de/RAVE), an ambitious Galactic Archaeology programme aimed at understanding the formation and evolution of our Milky Way Galaxy.
- We are a member of the Galaxy Mass Assembly (GAMA) - an international project that aims to exploit the latest generation of ground-based wide-field survey facilities to study galaxy formation and evolution.
- We are involved in AstroGrid, the UK's Virtual Observatory project, that is developing new software tools to access and analyse astronomy data from all over the world.
Study Astronomy
- StudyAstronomy.com is our world-leading Distance Learning brand.
- Starting in 1996, we have continuously developed these programmes, leading to the first ever Distance Learning BSc (Hons) in Astronomy available from 2006.
- Over 1000 students have benefited from these programmes.
- Subjects available are evolving all the time and include: Astronomy; Cosmology; Sun, Earth & Climate; Solar Astrophysics; Astrophysics of Galaxies; Physics for Astronomy; and IT for Astronomy.
