The MSc Human Resource Management/Development programme is intended for those with little or no work experience since graduation. Depending upon your option module choices and dissertation topic you may graduate with either an MSc in Human Resource Management (HRM) or an MSc in Human Resource Development (HRD).
A minimum of a lower second degree classification (2:2) from a recognised university, or a professional qualification deemed to be equivalent.

Semester 3 (May to early September)
You have the opportunity to complete a master’s dissertation under the guidance of your dissertation supervisor. It will involve you planning and implementing a research study on an approved topic. This is an ideal opportunity to personalise your study programme to suit your career aspirations and reflect your own interests in a particular HRM or HRD issue.

UCLan is an Accredited Centre for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), which means that it is empowered to award its own internally assessed MSc course which gives full exemption from the CIPD’s professional education route to membership. Thus, students who successfully complete the course will receive UCLan’s MSc in HRM or HRD and will also have fulfilled the CIPD’s skills and knowledge requirements for membership.
If you wish to join CIPD and eventually gain chartered membership, you will be required to complete a behavioural assessment and provide evidence that you have gained the necessary work experience in HRM/D. The UK Government has confirmed that a new postgraduate loan scheme will be introduced for students commencing a Full Masters Postgraduate programmes from 2016/17 academic year.
The programme meets the requirements of the “Advanced” level of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
In Semesters 1 and 2 students will be required to attend class meetings for up to 16 hours each week. Students are required to undertake additional study in their own time and this will involve some tutor directed study. The MSc is likely to take up as much of your time each week as would a full-time job. More guidance will be given on this issue during the induction to the course during the first week of attendance. The MSc experience consists of lectures, seminars, group tasks and activities, simulations and student presentations. Frequent use is made of case study and other student-centred materials. Students are expected to be active participants in the sessions. Groups or individuals may also seek guidance in tutorials with the course leader at the weekly Progress Tutorial.
You will be assessed through a variety of methods, the objective being to use the most appropriate method for the knowledge and/or skill/s being assessed. As regards assessments, in the taught modules there will be essays, reports (sometimes based upon a case study analysis), presentations (sometimes in small teams, sometimes solo) and some unseen examinations. You also have to complete a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your continuous professional development during the MSc HRM/D programme. The final piece of assessed work that you complete is a 1500 word dissertation.
