Jackie's experience navigating career and parenthood

Jackie Day-Garner – Associate Dean School of Health, Social Work and Sport.

Meet Jackie

I have worked for the University 22 years in various roles and now I’m an Associate Dean in the School of Health, Social Work and Sport. Throughout my career I have been fully supported by colleagues and managers as an openly gay woman. This was enhanced when my wife and I decided to have a family. We were supported by the People Team discussing how shared parental leave worked and the benefits to which we were entitled.

I was fully supported by the University through the six months I had off and stayed connected with colleagues to make my transition easier when coming back to work, especially at that time in a new role and post-Covid.

UCLan has an amazing Pre-school centre on campus which all three of my children attended. This was so reassuring, knowing that they were near when working on campus. In my present role I appreciate the flexibility I have juggling a full-time job and being a parent and UCLan has supportive processes to facilitate this.
