Originally trained at Manchester Polytechnic (now MMU) Steve graduated in 1987 with a degree in Design for Communications Media – Illustration. Steve has worked as a freelance illustrator for a wide variety of design and publishing clients for over 25 years.

Initially working as an educator part time at Bradford College of Art Steve became a full time lecturer at UCLan in September 1999.

He continues to draw regularly and in 2013 he was shortlisted for the Association of Illustrators Illustration Awards.

Full Profile

Steve graduated from Manchester Polytechnic in 1987 with a degree in Design for Communications Media – Illustration. Whilst a student he was selected for and exhibited in the AOI Images 11 Best of British Illustration annual and the Readers Digest Young Illustrators Awards where he sold his illustrations for "Cider With Rosie" to Laurie Lee. After graduation he was awarded an artist’s residency by North Wales Arts Association, before going on to be employed as a design assistant, and in house illustrator for a small graphic design company. 

Steve has worked as a freelance illustrator for over 25 years for a wide variety of design, advertising and publishing companies throughout the UK. His clients have included; Carlsberg Tetley, Taylor’s, Halifax, Oxford University Press, National Trust, etc. Before becoming employed as a full time lecturer at UCLAN. 

In 1997 Steve’s illustration work for children was selected for the prestigious Bologna Children’s Book Fair Exhibition in Italy. He is especially interested in children’s literature, children's book design and illustration and he wrote, runs and teaches the MA in Children’s Book Illustration at UCLan. 

Steve continues to work as an illustrator and is fascinated by the communicative power of drawing, he tries to draw every day and keeps a sketchbook with him as often as possible. In 2012 Steve was awarded research funding to publish a newspaper of sketchbook drawings that was distributed to fellow passengers on his daily commute. In 2013 the publication was shortlisted for the Association of Illustrators Illustration Awards in the Public Realm category and exhibited at Somerset House in London. 

His sketchbook work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally.
