Peter joined UCLan in 1986 as a Lecturer in Plant Biochemistry. He has since held a number of senior academic positions in the University, including Head of Department of Biological Sciences, Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medicine and Dentistry, and Associate Dean of Psychology.

Full Profile

Peter studied as an undergraduate at Aston University from 1976-9. After gaining a First Class Honours degree in Biology he remained at Aston to undertake his PhD studies working with Mr Bert Hawkes in the Applied Hydrology Research Group (1979-82). After a short period working as Schools Liaison Officer for Aston University, Peter gained a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Hertfordshire working with Dr Mike Trevan on plant cell and enzyme immobilization.

In 1986 Peter was appointed as a Lecturer in Plant Biochemistry at UCLan, and by 2002 had been appointed as Head of UCLan’s Department of Biological Sciences. Peter was instrumental in the establishment of UCLan’s School of Pharmacy in 2007.

In 2008 Peter joined UCLan’s School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education and later became Associate Dean.

Peter joined UCLan’s School of Psychology as Associate Dean in 2013 and became Director of Academic Development for the College of Science and Technology in 2015.

Peter has carried out collaborative research with a wide variety of companies including GlaxoSmithKline and Pilkington Glass. He has acted as a Special Expert for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, working in Latvia, Austria and Brazil. Peter has published over 30 refereed papers and book chapters and has made over 20 presentations at conferences at workshops, ranging from international symposia on immobilized biocatalysts to the RSC Parliamentary Links Day in the Houses of Parliament.

Peter retains his interests in biochemistry, enzymology and electrochemistry and has a keen interest in science communication, coordinating national web and email forums for Biology and Psychology Teachers and for Science Technicians.
