Susan is a Senior Clinical Tutors in the School of Dentistry and the Specialist lead for the 2 Dental Public Health (DPH) modules DG2007 and DG3004 and have input in a shared module DG 4003. Roles include:- 1. Clinical supervision of dental students practicing dentistry 2. Running tutorials and study groups. 3. Assessing patients for allocation to suitable students,undertaking treatment when too complex for students 4. Leading, co-ordinating and delivering lectures within the DPH Modules

Full Profile

Susan qualified from Newcastle University as a dental surgeon in 1985.
After qualifying she joined the Community Dental Service in Huddersfield where she specialised in treating vulnerable adults and children with complex needs, within a hospital, mobile dental clinic and domiciliary setting as well as in a dental surgery. 

Whilst in this role Susan was involved in epidemiology, oral health education delivery and teaching/ training of dental nurses working towards their National examination.

As well as clinical dentistry she worked closely with the British Dental Association to promote dental education throughout Yorkshire, and held the post of Secretary and Chair of the Yorkshire Division of the Community Dental Service Section.

In 1992 Susan gained an MSc in Health Promotion and Education from Manchester University – my dissertation being on “The perceptions, beliefs and attitudes of carers’, with reference to dental care, of people with Alzheimer’s disease”.

In 2000 left Yorkshire and eventually took up a post as Dental Lead for Dental Access in East Cheshire where she was instrumental in setting up, recruiting to and running a new Dental Access Centre, based in Macclesfield, with satellites in Winsford and Northwich.

After a short spell in Warrington doing Dental Access work, she moved to Morecambe in 2006, where she was able to focus on treating vulnerable children and adults. Susan also specialised in oral health education, training other health professionals, clinical governance and audit.

In 2007 set up the Certificate in Oral Health Education (NEBDN) course for dental nurses with funding from the North West Deanery.

In 2008 gained my PGCE (FE) from UCLan through Lancaster and Morecambe College..
Also in that year she was promoted to Acting Clinical Director of the Community Dental Service for North Lancashire Primary Care Trust part of which was managing the new Dental Education Centre in Morecambe.

Whilst in this post Susan gained the Certificate in Leadership and Management FGDP(UK),
In 2009 I followed my vocation and joined the UCLan team, being appointed to Senior Tutor for the Morecambe Dental Education Centre. 

Susan gained recognisition for my PGCE within the HE sector and became a Fellow of the HEA in 2010. 
She is now the Lead tutor for the Dental Public Health Modules DG2007 and DG3004 where she liaises with the two local Consultants of Dental Public Health and research specialists to deliver these as part of the Modular BDS course - Within this role Susan organises assessments and link with the external examiners for these modules.

In February 2015, she was awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice in Education (Merit) – (UCLan.)
