Sergey got his first degree in chemistry from Taurida National University (Simferopol, Ukraine) in 2002. After spending two years in industry, he then did a PhD (2004-2007) at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. This was followed by post-doctoral positions in Edinburgh, Manchester and Liverpool before joining UCLan as lecturer in chemistry in December 2012. His research interests are mainly focussed on organometallic chemistry, biomimetic catalysis and their applications.
Sergey gained his first degree in chemistry in 2002 from Taurida National University (Simferopol, Ukraine). During his undergraduate research project in the group of Professor Victor F. Shulgin, he was performing research in the field of coordination chemistry. After graduation, Sergey spent two years working in a private chemical company in Simferopol (Chemproject Enterprises Ltd) being involved in a range of activities, including research and development, technical translation and patent writing.
This was followed by PhD studies (2004-2007) at Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh) under the supervision of Professor Alan J. Welch in the field of carborane and metallacarborane chemistry.
His first postdoctoral position was in the University of Edinburgh (2007-2009) with Professor Polly L. Arnold, working on synthesis and small molecule activation studies of metal-carbene complexes. In his second postdoc with Dr Michael J. Ingleson (2010-2011, University of Manchester), he continued with carbene chemistry in this case investigating iron-carbene complexes. Sergey's research during the third postdoctoral position was with Professor Matthew J. Rosseinsky FRS (2011-2012, University of Liverpool) and was mainly focussed on the organometallic and catalytic aspects of the Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) chemistry.
He joined the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in December 2012 as lecturer in chemistry in the School of Forensic and Investigative Sciences. He mainly teaches modules on organometallic chemistry and catalysis.
His current research interests are mainly focussed on organometallic chemistry, biomimetic catalysis and their applications.
