Bogdan has been with the University of Central Lancashire since 1997. He is research active within the area of digital engineering and is the co-founder and head of the Robotics and Computer Vision Research Laboratory. He is a member of the Applied Digital Signal and Image Processing Research Centre and the Advanced Digital Manufacturing Technology Research Centre. He has active collaborative links with industry, number of hospitals and universities across Europe. He has participated in 21 research projects, leading 11 of them securing approximately £3M for his research, produced more than 110 publications and won several awards for research in computer vision and image processing.

Full Profile

Professor Matuszewski heads the Robotics and Computer Vision Laboratory in the ADSIP Research Centre and chairs the UCLan 3D Imaging Working Group. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the British Machine Vision Association (BMVA) and the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Society (MICCAI). He has published over 110 research papers in different areas of computer vision and medical image processing and successfully supervised 13 PhDs.

He is a work package leader for the FP7 funded “SEMEiotic Oriented Technology for Individual’s CardiOmetabolic risk self-assessmeNt and Self-monitoring (SEMEOTICONS)” project. He was principal investigator for the EPSRC funded ECSON (EP/F013698/1), MEGURATH (EP/D077540/1) and TeRaFS (EP/H024913/1) projects. He has participated in 21 EU, Research Council, and industry funded research projects, including PIMHAI, INDeT, INDUCE, SPACERANE, JERI and DIAPS. He has been leading 11 of these projects, securing approximately £3M for his research. He has active collaborative links with industry, number of hospitals and universities across Europe. He has been member of organising and reviewing committees for number of conferences including: ICIP, SMC, FG, VISSAP, EST, MedViz, and GAMI. He organized/chaired 10 conference sessions including 4 at IEEE conferences: SMC’2013, CYBCONF’2013, SMC’2012, ICIP’2011.

He is coordinating activities of the Engineering and Computational Science for Oncology Network. His PhD was in the area of inverse problems, since then his research interests included: industrial and medical computer vision; use of Bayesian methodology for modelling, tracking and pattern recognition; deformable models and their applications to data registration and segmentation. His most recent research projects include: diffeomorphic image registration, level set segmentation incorporating prior shape and topology information, non-rigid structure from motion and 3D dimensional data acquisition and analysis with emphasis on face analysis.

Research Interests

Bogdan is a member of the Applied Digital Signal and Image Processing (ADSIP) Research Centre. His main research interest is in data analysis, in the recent years he has concentrated on analysis of visual information working in the areas of medical and industrial computer vision (image processing). He has been leading/participating in a number of externally and internally funded projects as well as supervised a fair number of PhDs with the focus on developing new image/vision analysis algorithms and their use in real applications. Bogdan is particularly interested in: use of Bayesian methodology for data modelling, pattern recognition and tracking; statistical shape analysis; deformation modelling for model-based recognition, segmentation and registration.
