Emma Thirkell is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and holds a master's degree in Human Resource Management, and a PhD from Newcastle University. Emma’s research area is Lean Management, and she regularly engages in research outside of her teaching. Prior to working in Higher Education, Emma worked in retail management.

Full Profile

Prior to working in higher education, Emma worked in retail management while completing her MA in Human Resource Management. Since then, she has regularly engaged with a wide range of organisations and industries in order to research Lean management. Emma has helped organisations redesign their Lean training, and has produced a report for the Association of Business Schools on Lean in Higher Education. She is interested in the implementation, management and leadership of Lean on employees, and engages in research-led teaching in order to apply her area to her modules.

Research

Following on from her PhD, Emma is currently engaged in research involving the experiences of Lean training by employees. The research focuses on the role, effectiveness, design and implementation of Lean training events, in order to aid employees in their jobs. She is working in partnership with a colleague from St Andrews to do this.
