Research
Research Interests
My work focuses on the role that friendships play for lonely children and attempts to understand how loneliness develops over the lifespan. My longitudinal work has highlighted the need to differentiate between transient and chronic loneliness; it seems that it is persistent, chronic loneliness in childhood and adolescence that predicts depression in late adolescent. My recent studies are looking to determine whether chronic loneliness throughout childhood is also important for other health outcomes. My other recent work includes the establishment of other longitudinal samples where I am able to answer questions about the longitudinal relationships between loneliness, trust, social-acceptance and depression.
I am also interested in the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in people’s every-day lives. This work includes the validation of EI measures and its association with actual social engagement and social development.
