An exploratory study of the causation and management of aggression in residential care facilities for people with dementia

Aims

  • To explore the views of nurses, other care staff and relatives as to the causes of aggression in people with dementia in residential care settings.
  • To explore the views of nurses, other care staff and relatives as to the most effective ways of managing aggression in people with dementia in residential care settings.
  • To discover what strategies are used in practice to manage aggression in people with dementia in residential care settings.

Background

Little work has been carried out to ascertain the views of nurses and other care staff as to the likely causes of aggression in people with dementia, and how best to manage aggressive behaviour. Studies that have been done have been small-scale and have used qualitative methodologies. There is also little evidence as to how aggressive behaviour is actually managed in practice. Again, most studies that have been carried out have been small-scale and no studies appear to have been carried out in the United Kingdom. There have also been no studies that have sought the perspective of relatives of residents as to the causation and management of aggression among their family members.

Design

This study will comprise 2 stages:

Stage One

  • A survey of the views of nurses and other care staff as to the likely causes of, and preferred management strategies for aggression in people with dementia in residential care facilities, using quantitative methodology.
  • A quantitative analysis of incidents involving aggression by people with dementia in residential care facilities to ascertain actual causes of the aggression, and management strategies adopted in practice by nurses and other care staff.

Stage Two

  • Semi-structured individual interviews with a purposive sample of nursing and other care staff to consolidate and enrich the quantitative survey data.
  • Focus group interviews with a purposive sample of relatives of residents.
