UCLan makes key international appointment

Chris Theobald

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Robin Pollard as its new Vice-President, UCLan Group and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International).

Professor Pollard, who arrived in Preston earlier this week to take up his new role, is an experienced and accomplished leader of university developments. His experience extends to the building of overseas campuses, forging and managing international partnerships, large-scale organisational change including campus transfers, and the development of online education.

Robin is a New Zealander and trained as a physicist. Amongst his many notable achievements are the development of the leading private campus in Malaysia; his leadership and facilitation of complex consultations with campus and regional community members to successfully transition a regional campus to Federation University Australia; his oversight of the academic endeavour during the transition of a South African campus into a partnership with Laureate Education Inc; and his review of online offerings including a partnership with Pearson.

Commenting on the appointment Richard Hext, UCLan’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “I am delighted to welcome a man whose experience and track record within the field of higher education international development is second to none. Here at UCLan Robin will work directly with me and the Vice-Chancellor. He will lead the UCLan academic community in support of Group operations, and play a direct role in our international development.”

"Well-conceived and well-implemented partnerships, which bring together the entire University community, can really help cement UCLan’s reputation as a world-class modern university"

Professor Pollard added: “Well-conceived and well-implemented partnerships, which bring together the entire University community, can really help cement UCLan’s reputation as a world-class modern university. UCLan's international developments are bold and potentially transformative so this new role represents an exciting challenge for me."

During his career Professor Pollard has undertaken research positions in Canada, USA, and Australia. After completing an MBA, he moved from physics to marketing academic roles at Monash University, Melbourne. This led to his substantial involvement in the global activities of that university, firstly as the Foundation Professor and Head-of-School, Business and Information Technology, Monash University Sunway Campus Malaysia (1998 - 2001) and then as Associate Dean (International), Faculty of Information Technology (2001 - 2004).

Having taken up a position with the University of New England in 2004, Professor Pollard returned to Monash University in 2007 as Pro Vice-Chancellor, Monash University Malaysia. He held this position until last year, when he became Pro Vice-Chancellor & President, Monash University Gippsland, then Academic Vice-President (Campus Transition and Partnerships).
