11 October 2012

Mark Gilbert named as winner of the award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

The School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education is delighted to announce that the winner of the award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is Mark Gilbert.

Mark, the Academic Lead for Technical Dentistry, has developed an online clinical training school that allows students, mentors and academics participating in the two year postgraduate diploma in Clinical Dental Technology to work to agreed standards of practice, shared learning and feedback.

“Mark is a worthy winner of the award. His use of in-course social networking activity has encouraged and supported the students in an online environment and enhanced their learning experience.”

Barbara Brown, Teaching and Learning Co-ordinator for the School, said: “Mark is a worthy winner of the award. His use of in-course social networking activity has encouraged and supported the students in an online environment and enhanced their learning experience.”

After receiving the award, Mark said: “It is my belief in this Facebook age we must develop personal relationships with our students online rather than empty transactions of traditional online education. The Clinical Skills Training School allows students to connect via the web to a stimulating environment with ‘real world’ examples whereby they can learn anytime, anywhere.”
