Alongside his career in academia, Philip has a successful practice as a Solicitor’s Agent – which regularly sees Philip appearing in cases before the District Bench in the County Court with much of his work focussing on those cases which involve vulnerable parties, and where civil legal aid is not available.
Further to the above, Philip benefits from Judicial and Quasi-Judicial experience as both a Justice of the Peace (now supplemental list), and a Disciplinary Commission Chairman for Nottinghamshire Football Association.
Philip leads our undergraduate Criminal Law provision, and is also allocated to contribute towards teaching and assessment in the areas of Criminal Procedure and Medical Law. Philip’s research interests lie in the areas of General Criminal Law as well as Professional Regulation, with a focus on Professional Discipline in the Healthcare and Veterinary Industries. Philip has a developing research interest in Coronial Law as well as protective orders relating to domestic violence and abuse.
Philip is happy to consider requests for principal supervision up to, and including, Masters’ Level in his research interests. Philip is also happy to act as a second or third supervisor to PhD Students in his principal areas of expertise where appropriate.
Philip has benefited from holding academic posts in various universities in both the public and private sector. He also has the benefit of continuing experience of direct legal practice as a solicitor's agent. Philip has developed a reputation of being a safe pair of hands for students of both the law, and the wider professions, given his expertise in relation to professional regulatory law and the processes related thereto.
