In addition to teaching duties, Nicola is an active researcher in the areas of second language pragmatics and teacher education. Her publications include Teaching Pragmatics and Instructed Second Language Learning (Bloomsbury, 2020), and two co-edited volumes: Email Pragmatics (John Benjamins, 2022) and Pragmatics and English Language Learning (Cambridge University Press, 2022).
Nicola has been a learner, teacher and researcher of foreign languages all of her academic life. She spent several years working overseas as an English language teacher before moving into teacher education. Nicola has worked here since 2002. She has developed a career as a language teacher and teacher educator. Her postgraduate studies in Applied Linguistics at Lancaster University helped shape her research interest in second language pragmatics. Nicola is one of the few UK-based researchers in this area. She is responsible for organising and contributing to national and international events and conferences in this field. She is a reviewer for several high impact journals. Nicola is a key member of the British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL) Language Learning and Teaching Special Interest Group.
