During her final year on the BA (Hons) Dance Performance & Teaching (DPT) degree, Katie Owens has also been a Youth Dance Ambassador for The Lowry Theatre in Manchester.
The scheme aims to create opportunities for young people in the North West to work with renowned choreographers and dancers. Some of these opportunities have included holding interviews, writing reviews, watching rehearsals and having the opportunity to be mentored by other dancers. With her fellow ambassadors Katie set up the Undergraduates Dance Anywhere performance platform; showcasing site specific choreography from North West dance degree students.
Katie said: “We were able to take full ownership of the project, and I have been able to develop my skills in project management, marketing, design & communication. I now have a real understanding of being a youth dance coordinator on a regional scale and have developed a real passion for this kind of work.”
Lucy Nicholson, course leader for the DPT degree at UCLan added: “It’s so wonderful students can access opportunities like this within the region. This has been an invaluable experience for Katie, one that we hope she’ll take forward into a successful dance development career.”
