BA English Literature (2015)
Joshua wanted to study something that he was passionate about as he didn’t have any immediate ideas about what he wanted to do after university. After seeing that UCLan’s degree in English Literature covered an immensely broad spectrum, Joshua made his decision and decided to study at UCLan.
Joshua says: “I chose this course for my own enjoyment and from the assumption that it would lead to careers that I also enjoyed. In retrospect, this was completely the right decision.”
During his time at UCLan, Joshua took on as much voluntary work as possibly in order to add to his breadth of achievements and skills.
After graduating from UCLan, Joshua was employed as the Marketing Officer for UCLan’s Child Computer Interaction (ChiCI) Research Group. This role involves interviewing researchers, developing marketing strategies and using create writing and sequential art skills to develop a character to link the research of the group.
Reflecting on his studies at UCLan, Joshua says: “My degree has rejuvenated my love of reading and helped me to develop a more a fluid style of writing.
There are numerous transferable skills that I have acquired throughout my time at UCLan, but the boost to my confidence and ability to speak in public are the areas that I am most grateful for having improved.”
Since university, Joshua created a comic, which has since received two awards. He won The Lakes International Comic Art Festival Award and Ideas Tap Innovators Award Fund, as well as having poetry published in various publications.
On advising prospective students, Joshua says: “Take every opportunity that comes your way. All the small chances add up and help you build a skills base for the future.”
