Explore the world of professional music, with a course that balances vocation and vision – offering both career-ready technical skills and the freedom to explore your own creativity.

This is a course with creativity, innovation and excellence at its core. From the state-of-the-art facilities to an expert team of supportive staff, we boast everything you need to explore, discover and develop new techniques in music production and performance.

Throughout the course, you’ll tackle a range of independent, collaborative and client-based projects to help you develop your vision and artistry. While it’s a route for creative students, it’s also rooted in the real world. You’ll get to grips with industry-standard kit, gain vital technical skills, learn about careers in the industry and pull together a career-boosting portfolio.

Along the way, you’ll cultivate your understanding in areas of composition, songwriting, production, sound design and performance – to name just a few. By the time you graduate, you’ll leave us prepared to take your first steps in the dynamic music industry.

Accreditations

This course is industry accredited by JAMES and makes full use of broadcast standard production equipment and studios. JAMES is a consortium of music, entertainment and media industry organisations collaborating in the support of education and promotion of excellence.

What you'll do

You can join our Recordings Group, a modern-day record label and music organisation designed to give you a taste of the real world of today’s music industry.
We offer the opportunity of working with The Global Sound Movement, sampling the sounds of hand-built instruments around the world – from Uganda to Bali.
You’ll learn from industry professionals with extensive experience and diverse expertise – offering academic support, practical tuition and masterclasses in industry-standard techniques.

Our Music Production and Performance BA (Hons) degree offers a blend of creative freedom, technical ability and practical experience – a solid foundation for pursuing a future in music.

This is a course designed to prepare you for the real-life challenges and opportunities of the music industry. Career development is a central aspect of the programme – it’s even one of the modules you’ll study each year. So, as part of your degree, you’ll build a profile online, tackle a live client brief and learn about professional preparation.

In your last year with us, you’ll have the chance to attend our cJAM event, offering a wealth of opportunities to learn more about careers across the creative industries, along with the chance to develop your professional network. With a skills-focused speed-dating-style event, you can meet up to 30 industry professionals looking for a student like you to work on a placement – it’s your chance to impress.

By the time you leave us, you should be well on the way along your career path – whether it leads to a role as an artist, performer, session musician, composer, sound designer, engineer or producer. You’ll also find some of our graduates passing on what they’ve learned by working in education, both as teachers and technicians.

While your studies will involve a mixture of lectures, seminars and independent study, this course is primarily practical. As such, you’ll focus on developing studio, composition and performance skills – putting theoretical knowledge of techniques into action through creative assignments and projects.

You’ll do your learning in the Media Factory – a multi-million-pound facility that’s tailor-made to offer industry-ready skills. There, you’ll get to grips in our state-of-the-art live room/control room configured recording studios, based on the fully analogue Audient ASP8024 Heritage Edition console and the digitally controlled analogue Neve Genesys Black console. They also include 5.1 configuration, Logic Pro, Pro Tools and Ableton DAWs, a range of professional-spec microphones and plugins including Native Instruments Komplete 11, Waves, Fabfilter and Melodyne, among others.

You’ll also have access to two dedicated ensemble rooms, with professional-standard PA systems, mixing consoles, instruments and amplifiers, while there are 5 project studios, a professional sound stage and video edit suites.

Many of our students look to integrate work experience placements into their final year. If you want to do the same, we’ll be ready to offer our support – ensuring that you have the flexibility to fit in tutorials.

We work closely with the University’s Recordings Group, our own record label and music business. Merging academia and industry, the group offers the chance to work with accomplished musicians and music business practitioners to gain exposure to key aspects of the contemporary music industry.

We also offer the chance to work with The Global Sound Movement who, through sound-based recording projects, work with communities around the world to sample unique, hand-built instruments of ethnic significance.
