Considering a career in Modern Languages and education? Perhaps you are thinking teaching abroad or teaching multiple languages. If so, our degree in Education and Modern Language could be the perfect choice for you.

This course enables you to study education; from early years to lifelong learning. Combine this with an in-depth study of one of seven modern languages: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian or Spanish.

Alongside learning languages, you'll study key issues in education, such as:

You will also have opportunities to gain first-hand experience through placements. These will take place in educational settings and link what you learn to what you observe and experience in classrooms.

The language units will help you to look beyond the mechanics of language. Focusing on the social and cultural contexts; debating history, politics, film, literature and more.

You’ll learn in small groups, offering maximum interaction with your lecturers and peers. This will also give you plenty of opportunities to practise. You will also have the opportunity to spend a year abroad studying your chosen language.

What you'll do

The course is ideal for anyone with an interest in languages who aspires to teach. It is not a teacher training programme but ideal preparation for one at any level. It also offers routes into non-teaching careers and postgraduate research.
You’ll combine the study of Education with one of seven languages: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian or Spanish.
This combination will provide you with skills and experiences that enhance your employability. Opening up many opportunities for a career in education and languages.

Studying our BA (Hons) Education and Modern Language can open the doors to a career in education where a specialism included on the national curriculum is required. As well as a wealth of other employment opportunities including finance, tourism or diplomacy.

You’ll have support from our academic advisers and the University’s Careers service. This is so you can undertake further study towards teacher training or postgraduate study. Education professionals could opt to study our MEd Professional Practice in Education course or a Professional Doctorate in Education.

When you graduate you’ll leave us with the skills and understanding that would make you a valuable asset to a variety of employers. There will be many career opportunities overseas too. Many of our language graduates have gone abroad to work in teaching, translating and interpreting, and journalism, among others.

Throughout the course you’ll attend a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical sessions. Independent study is an important aspect of this degree. On occasion, you’ll work in small groups.

During the course you’ll have the opportunity to undertake at least one placement in a teaching environment. This could be a nursery, primary, secondary or further education/training to help you gain vital work experience. If you enjoy these you can choose a placement each year, in different settings.

We’ll assess you through your coursework. This will include:

A varied mix of essays
Individual and group presentations
Critical reviews of research
Reflective learning diaries
Portfolios
Developing strategies and lesson plans
Designing small-scale research proposals.

We’ll also teach you a range of skills that will prove useful in your future career. You’ll learn how to deliver presentations, solve problems, and collaborate in teams. You'll also critically assess policies and literature in the field of education, and more.

We take a communicative approach to language learning. This means putting an emphasis on the practical use of the languages to help you become fluent. While much of your learning will come through lectures and seminars, you’ll also have plenty of independent study to do too.

The course comes with the option of spending your third year abroad. This could be on a work placement, a study placement at a partner institution, or as a Foreign Language Assistant in a school. As well as being a great way to develop language skills, it can also be a vital boost to your employability.

You'll undertake a series of aural, written, and oral assessments to measure your progression. For some modules, you’ll also have essays and portfolios to deliver.
