This module will provide you with an overview of critical issues for children, families and young people, taking into account a variety of factors and including the views of service users and carers, theoretical concepts, research evidence and relevant policy and legislation. This module recognises and critically discusses the prominence of children, families and ‘youth’ in Government policies.

This module aims to give you the opportunity to consider international approaches to childcare and family policy. You will consider the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of childhood and family life. This will ultimately build your understanding of how childhood is socially constructed worldwide.

This module will provide you with the opportunity to apply your understanding of the organisational and national policies, legislation and skills frameworks to their own professional working practice. It'll increase your opportunities for critical analysis and reflection in pursuit of best practice with children and young people including the role of practitioners as ‘change agents’. 

This module provides an opportunity for you to undertake independent study in an area of your own choosing involving a particular issue of relevance to children and young people’s lives and services. You will be guided and supported by your dissertation supervisor to plan, carry out the project and write it up as an academic research.

This module will development your knowledge of children’s wellbeing in the early years. It will introduce you to policy, practice and theories of wellbeing in the early childhood, exploring the pedagogical principles and practices which will be beneficial to the your ongoing professional development as early years educators.

The aim of this module is to introduce you to a wide range of academic disciplines to the key theories, concepts and discourses relating to disabilities in the UK and beyond. You'll engage with the emergence of alternative perceptions of impairment and which factors may disable people. You'll also develop a more nuanced understanding of disability as a lived experience.

In this module, you will develop your knowledge on aspects of learning, the curriculum, and assessment such as learning theory, curriculum delivery, teaching and learning, compulsory and entitlement curricula, transitions and curricula, curriculum, economy and society, and assessment and its impact on the curriculum.

In this module you will explore the education for the vulnerable children and young people. The children you will explore may include victims of abuse and children involved with crime. If you are considering a career in teaching, social work or care, this module will benefit you.

In this module, you will develop an understanding of the relationship between lifelong learning and community development. You will explore new ways of empowering communities and be given a chance to explore innovation in practice.

This module will identify the crucial relationship between the theory and practice of social development and empowerment and how to apply these theories to different marginalised groups through a variety of methods and techniques.

This module enables you to engage in experiential learning through time spent in an educational setting, to critically reflect upon and assess the relevance of your observations with broader aspects of educational policy and practice and equip you with experience and insights to enhance your employability.

To achieve greater knowledge and critical understanding of the core concepts, issues, theory and research in the social care of people recovering from mental ill-health.

The module aims to provide a critical appreciation of the historical transformation in the social roles relating to Children and Youth, assessment of competing perceptions of youth as both ‘problematic’ and ‘vulnerable’, appraisal of the development and impact of ‘youth culture’ on society, together with a theoretical and comparative understanding of social and criminal justice policy currently affecting young people in Britain. The module further aims to provide critical assessment of the effects of discrimination and social problems experienced by young people in contemporary society.

The module aims to develop understanding of the ways that gender affects the provision of welfare services in Britain. You'll explore changes and continuities in post-war Britain to develop a more critical understanding of contemporary debates about gender relations and the role of the state.

The module covers a number of topic areas chosen both for their importance in educational practice and to reflect the application of psychological research to the area of education. The module will pay particular attention to assessment issues in educational psychology and will look at the role of an Educational Psychologist.

You'll get the opportunity to pursue an area of interest in a field or applied area of psychology through independent study. You'll also develop your research skills through reading and interrogation of a variety of resources, gaining up to date knowledge and demonstrating critical appreciation of your chosen topic.
