The University is committed to the development of sustainable waste management practices coordinated and managed by a dedicated Waste and Recycling Team in Estates Services.
We adopt the waste hierarchy across all activities: re-use wherever possible, both internally and externally including furniture and unwanted stationery; provide appropriate recycling facilities for the collection of priority waste streams – batteries, cans, cardboard, paper, plastic bottles, glass; as well as having operational recycling schemes for segregating green waste, kitchen food waste, metal, wood and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
Our current waste contract with B&M Ltd, a Recycling-Led Waste Management Company, ensures that we reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill to a minimum - over 95% of the general/residual* waste we produce is diverted from landfill using waste to energy treatment technologies. Only inert waste associated with our academic provision for ceramics/construction based courses is sent for landfill.
