Students playing sports

The University offers opportunities for student athletes to be supported with their aspirations of a potential playing career whilst also studying for a high-quality degree.  Scholarships are offered in our focal sports and we also invite applications from high performing individual athletes (see below): 

Focal Sports:

  • Basketball
  • Golf
  • Netball
  • Rugby League
  • Table Tennis
  • Women’s Football

Talented individuals
We invite applications from talented individuals, in any sport, who are competing at age-group or senior national or international level.

Elite Award
£1,000 cash award annually [reviewed annually up to a total of £3,000] + our athlete support package (see below)

  • Free sports performance support including: Fitness assessment, Strength and conditioning, Physiotherapy and rehabilitation,Lifestyle management, Nutrition programmes and Sport psychology

Terms & Conditions

Scholarship athletes are expected to:

  • Fully engage with their academic programmes of study
  • Train and perform to the best of their ability
  • Contribute to the University’s sports performance, by competing in British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS), unless otherwise agreed with the Director of Sport or nominee
  • Be ambassadors for their sports and the University

Selection Process:

  • Applicants that meet the criteria will be assessed against the University’s sporting objectives
  • The selection process is competitive; meeting the criteria is not a guarantee of being awarded a Scholarship
  • The scholarship award is for entry in academic year 2020-21; applications cannot be carried over or deferred. Students wishing to receive a scholarship in future years will be required to reapply in the next academic cycle


  • The student must be studying on a full time or part time taught course at the University’s main campus in Preston, starting in September 2020 to be eligible for a sport scholarship.
  • The scholarships are available to UK, EU and International students.
  • If any of the information provided in the application for a scholarship is incorrect, the University reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship offered

Sporting Criteria for Focal Sports:

Sport Criteria

Men’s: Experience of playing basketball at Men’s National League Division Three or above.

Women’s: Experience of playing basketball at WEABL (Women’s Elite Academy Basketball League) standard. 


Men’s: 1 Handicap

Women’s: 3 Handicap


Age group/Senior National/International standard

Experience of playing for a National League side (Premier League 1, 2 or 3) or a Regional ‘Premier’ League side

Rugby League


Further Education Colleges county/International player

Category 3 Academy player (these are FE colleges linked with Professional clubs)

Category 1 & 2 Super League/Championship U19 Academy/reserves player

BARLA county or international age group player

Table Tennis Men’s and Women’s: Individuals competing at age-group or senior national or international level
Women’s Football

Age group/Senior National/International standard

Experience of playing for a club in Tiers 2-4 of the Women’s Football Pyramid (i.e. Women’s Championship, National League Premier North/South, Division 1 North/Midlands/South East/South West)

Talented individuals from any sport Individuals competing at age-group or senior national or international level

There will be two rounds of decision making on Sports Scholarship for entry in September 2020:

  • Round One: Deadline for applications, midnight on Thursday 18th June
  • Round Two: Deadline for applications, midnight on Sunday 30th August
