The University of Central Lancashire offers a range of Sports Scholarships aimed at supporting both individual and team performance. These scholarships are open to students applying to study on ANY full time UCLan undergraduate degree course.


Applications are particularly welcome from:

  • Basketball
  • Cycling
  • Golf
  • Netball
  • Rugby League
  • Rugby Union
  • Table Tennis
  • Women’s Football
  • and a number of scholarships are available across a further range of sports*.


Scholarships are awarded according to representative performance levels:

Excellence in Sport Award – worth over £3,000 for County and Regional level representative performers –

  • Free access to UCLan sports facilities
  • Free scholarship sports kit
  • Free sports club membership
  • Free sports performance support including-
    • Fitness
    • Lifestyle management
    • Nutrition programmes
    • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation
    • Sport psychology
    • Strength and conditioning

Elite Sports Performance Award – worth over £4,000 for National representative performers –

  • All of the above, plus
  • A cash bursary payment up to £1,000

You will be provided with a cash payment and in return you will be expected to represent UCLan in the various competitions run by British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS).

The awards are initially for one year only and are reviewed and re-awarded at the end of each academic year, subject to performance criteria being maintained.

The Excellence in Sport Scholarship relates to the sport you might be competing in, and not the course you have applied for.

  • You must choose UCLan as your firm choice.
  • You must have residency status in the UK or Europe.
  • You must enrol on a full-time undergraduate course in September 2019 (if you defer your application you will not be eligible for a scholarship).

You need to demonstrate a level of excellence which will be assessed according to the following criteria:

Basketball. Players should be part of regional or national teams or playing at National League standard.

Cycling. Road/track cyclists should be Junior 1/2 riders or at least 2nd Category Senior riders (1st Cat/Elite riders would be preferred). Mountain bikers should be accomplished riders from either the Junior or Senior ranks (evidence of high level performance will be necessary).

Golf. As a minimum, female applicants should have a handicap of 5 or better. As a minimum, male applicants should have a handicap of 2 or better.

Netball. Players should be part of regional or national talent development programmes or pathways.

Rugby League. Applicants should be at least Service Area or above.

Rugby Union. Applicants should be at county level and above.

Table Tennis. Applicants should be playing at county representative level and above.

Women’s Football. Players should be attached to a recognised Centre of Excellence. You should be playing within the Combination Leagues or above.

Additional Sports: You should have achieved at least regional representative honours (i.e. county or equivalent depending on structures within each sport) in one of the following sports: 
*Badminton, Cricket, Fencing, Football, Handball, Hockey, Squash, Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball, Trampolining, Athletics, Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo, and Karate.
