The final placement experience for students on the BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy programme is a student arranged placement. In order to identify an appropriate placement to approach students should consider their employability and the range of skills and experiences they have gained throughout their placement experiences. At level 5 and level 6 where students have demonstrated autonomous practice as part of the assessment, students should normally have experienced placements in Acute, Rehabilitation, MSK and Community settings. The Level four experience is not be taken into account is a generic experience where the aims were focussed on developing communication skills and the ability to work autonomously is not assessed.
If students have experienced all core areas, experiences should be mapped to identify areas of practice may be missing utilising the framework below.
A broad experience base is therefore developed by combining the following:
If experience has been gained in demonstrating autonomous practice in all of the different aspects of practice and key experiences students may organise a placement in an area which interests them. Students are not permitted to complete the negotiated placement in a placement they have previously completed. The placement may be completed on the same site.
As this is a negotiated placement students must have communication with their personal tutor in identifying a suitable placement in which to complete your practical studies. If a placement is arranged which does not map adequately with previous experiences, students will not be allowed to complete the placement as this may affect the ability to meet the programme learning outcomes & therefore the minimum HCPC standards.
It is the student’s responsibility to organise the placement and this will involve making contact with Physiotherapy teams. This provides an excellent opportunity for students to network and gain confidence in approaching potential employers. Any approach should be professional and include reference to why the placement is being sought at this particular site. Students should be mindful that approaching multiple sites is discouraged as the work that is generated in trying to organise a placement is considerable and rejecting a placement as another has been sourced elsewhere is highly unprofessional.
The placement can be undertaken for five consecutive weeks any time within April and May. This is to provide some flexibility in terms of both arranging the placement and to allow students the opportunity to spend some time travelling if a placement is completed abroad.
As this placement is graded it is subject to the same rules as all other placements to ensure quality of the placement experience and to ensure HCPC requirements for placements are fulfilled. Educators should have completed a clinical educator course (this does not have to be with UCLan) and have in place processes with regard to ensuring a supportive learning environment and having high standards of health and safety.
Students may choose to complete their placement abroad or outside of the NorthWest region where placements contracts are established. If this is the case, you must speak with the clinical placement coordinators when arranging your placement as contracts may need to be established with the host organisation.
Once placements have been confirmed, please send direct educators to Physiotherapy Negotiated Placements Educator Information to complete the placement documentation. These forms are crucial in ensuring a clear audit trail with regard to the suitability of placements and to ensure University insurances are activated for your placement experience.
If this form is NOT completed you will not be allowed to go on your negotiated placement.
To ensure parity of assessment across all negotiated placement sites, educators from outside of the North West region will be asked to complete a short update on our assessment processes which is available via the Physiotherapy Negotiated Placements Educator Information [Link to page] page. This will be in the form of an online lecture.
As this is your final placement before graduation a ‘visiting tutor’ is not allocated for your placement. However, support for yourself or your educator can be accessed by contacting the email@example.com email where support can be arranged given by site visit, email, phone, skype or chat room.
