Use of mobile devices

Students should adhere to placement partner policies with regard to personal mobile phone use both whilst on duty and on any breaks. Good practice would be to switch off mobile phones on arriving in placement settings to avoid temptation. Contact numbers for the placement can be provided to family members/schools or caregivers for use in emergency situations.

It is recognised however that students may make use of Smartphones for accessing the internet to inform decision making, recording reflections on experiences or accessing online University resources. In these instances, this should be done with the express permission of the student’s supervising staff.

It is good practice to cover cameras on mobile devices whilst in practice settings to reassure patients/clients and staff that these are not being used.

Mobile devices should not be used in direct patient/client care areas without the consent of those receiving care.
