Are you interested in developing communication skills, building your confidence and meeting new people? The UCLan Engagement Academy is an opportunity to do all this whilst getting involved with public engagement.

What does Engagement Academy involve?

To programme is a combination of training, support and work experience.
After completing training and taking part in 30 hours of outreach and engagement activity you will become an Engagement Champion, which will open up opportunities for paid work and bidding for funding to deliver your own activities.

What’s in it for me?

- Build your confidence presenting and speaking to groups

- Meet new people
- Use volunteering hours to count towards the Livesey Award and/or register them with CVCL
- Become an Engagement Champion, leading to Paid work opportunities, Bidding in for funding to run your own projects

What if I’d like to get involved but I’m not a confident enough to do public engagement?
This programme is designed to support and train you so that you build the confidence over the course of the project. If you don’t feel confident – that’s fine! There are lots of different opportunities to get involved with and you can start off by assisting others during activities and build up your skills and confidence slowly. There will also be lots of training available from presentations skills to classroom management.

What is public engagement?
Public engagement activities are designed to share the activity that goes on inside the University with the public. This could range from running workshops in schools about your subject area to delivering events that give back to the community we are based in.

What projects can I get involved with?
The programme is very flexible and as long as you are delivering activities that public engagement team agree fit with the programme there is no limit to what you can do. We do, however have some set programmes that you can volunteer with:
- The UCLan and Ri Young Scientist Centre
- UCLan InTheCity (Community outreach)
- Lancashire Science Festival
- Outreach in schools including:
o Group mentoring projects
o Delivering interactive sessions around your subject
o Primary school activities

How do I apply?
To take part in the programme you need fill out an application form and commit to taking part in induction training and safeguarding training (dates below).

The deadline for applications is 5.00pm Thursday 12 October.

Induction training
Different dates available – you only need to attend one:
Wednesday 18 October – 1.00-4.00pm
Tuesday 24 October – 4.00pm-7.00pm
Safeguarding training
Different date available – you only need to attend one:
Wednesday 25 October – 1.00-4.00pm
Friday 17 November 10.00am-1.00pm

Optional training dates (more to come)
Working with young people and widening participation – Wednesday 8 November 1.00-4.00pm.
UCLan InTheCity training - 12.30-2.30pm
UCLan and Ri YSC training – 1.00-3.00pm
Classroom management skills – December, date and time TBC
Presentation skills – December, date and time TBC
