Ruth is Course Leader for the V300 Non-Medical Prescribing Course for nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals. She also leads on the Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults modules at Level 6 and Level 7 in the School of Health.
Ruth qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1987 and has held a variety of clinical posts in secondary and primary care including general surgery and General Practice. During this time Ruth successfully completed numerous professional qualifications including BA (Hons) Health Studies. Following this she qualified as a Community Specialist Practitioner.
Prior to taking up a lectureship at UCLan in 2003, Ruth was Clinical Lead for a Young People’s sexual, emotional and general health service and worked extensively with vulnerable groups. She qualified as a prescriber in 1998 and prescribed independently in General Practice, community settings and sexual health for a range of complex patients with long term conditions, contraceptive and gynaecological presentations and sexually transmitted infections. Ruth undertook further study at post-graduate level in Forensic Sexology which significantly enhanced her professional role with victims and perpetrators of domestic and sexual abuse.
In 2005 Ruth further developed her interest in forensics, law and ethical issues in relation to health and undertook a Masters’ degree in Medical Law & Bioethics. She graduated in 2010 with an LL.M (Master of Laws) from Lancashire Law School. This is a now a specific area of Ruth’s expertise, ongoing teaching commitments and research interests.
Ruth’s immediate future aspirations include embarking on a PhD in Medical Jurisprudence in 2016 and to increase her publication profile in this field.
