Susan Page is a qualified dentist and works as a Senior Teacher based at the Morecambe Dental Education Centre. She has special interests in oral health promotion, education and training. She is currently developing and delivering teaching modules within Dental Public Health and Oral Health Promotion. As well as a dental qualification, Susan has an MSc in Health Promotion and Education, a qualification in Leadership and Management from the Royal College, a Diploma in Education and gained QTLS status in 2014. She has recently been awarded MFDS RCPS from the Royal College in Glasgow.
Susan Page qualified from Newcastle University as a dental surgeon in 1985. After qualifying she joined the Community Dental Service in Huddersfield. She specialised in treating vulnerable adults and children with complex needs, within a hospital, mobile dental clinic and domiciliary setting as well as in a dental surgery. Whilst in this role she was involved in epidemiology, oral health education delivery and teaching/ training of dental nurses working towards their National examination. As well as clinical dentistry she worked closely with the British Dental Association to promote dental education throughout Yorkshire. She held the post of Secretary and Chair of the Yorkshire Division of the Community Dental Service Section.
In 1992 she gained an MSc in Health Promotion and Education from Manchester University – her dissertation being on “The perceptions, beliefs and attitudes of carers’, with reference to dental care, of people with Alzheimer’s disease”.
Whilst working in Yorkshire, she worked in partnership with Leeds Dental Hospital in piloting one of the first modular Dental Nurse Certificate courses and became an examiner for the National Examination Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) in 1998.
In 2000 she left Yorkshire and eventually took up a post as Dental Lead for Dental Access in East Cheshire where she was instrumental in setting up, recruiting to and running a new Dental Access Centre, based in Macclesfield, with satellites in Winsford and Northwich.
After a short spell in Warrington doing Dental Access work, Susan moved to Morecambe in 2006, where she was able to focus on treating vulnerable children and adults. She also specialised in oral health education, training other health professionals, clinical governance and audit. In 2007 she set up the Certificate in Oral Health Education (NEBDN) course for dental nurses with funding from the North West Deanery. In 2008 she gained her PGCE from UCLan.
In 2008 she was promoted to Acting Director of the Community Dental Service for North Lancashire Primary Care Trust part of which was managing the new Dental Education Centre in Morecambe. Whilst in this post she gained the Certificate in Leadership and Management FGDP(UK), (certificate pending). In 2009 she followed her vocation and joined the UCLan team, being appointed to Senior Tutor for the Morecambe Dental Education Centre.
Whilst in Morecambe, she sits on both the Health Research Authority (HRA) North West Research Ethics Committee and the University Ethics Committee (STEMH).
She is currently the President of the North West Branch of the British Dental Association (BDA), and has been the Section secretary for Lancaster and Morecambe for 8 years.
