Steve started his academic career at Salford Business School in 1989, moving to UCLan in 1995. Prior to his academic career, Steve worked in the NHS in a variety of roles in planning, hospital and general management. He has teaching and research interests in health policy and management. Steve is an RDT, (Research Degrees Tutor), in the School.

Steve is research active within the area of business and management and is a member of the Institute for Research into Organisations, Work and Employment. He is also a member of the Health Research Methodology and Implementation Group.

Steve has 17 years work experience in the NHS, and 30 years in academia. He has produced 61 outputs in total, including journal articles, (46), book chapters, conference papers and reports on health policy, leadership, and management topics. He has successfully supervised 3 PhD students to completion and is currently co-supervising 5 DBA and 2 PhD students. He has acted as internal or external examiner for several PhD/ taught Doctorate students. Steve has also acted as Principal Investigator for NHS- funded research projects.

He has been a reviewer for many journals including British Dental Journal, British Journal of General Management, Health Services Management Research, British Journal of Healthcare Management, Journal of Integrated Care, and a reviewer for grant awarding bodies such as ESRC.

Steve’s research output has been returned in the last four national research assessment exercises (RAE and REF) ie 1996, 2001, 2008, and 2014.

He has substantial experience of designing, delivering and leading NHS specific management programmes, including leadership courses for junior and senior doctors, nurses, managers, and allied health professionals. Steve has also delivered short courses/ CPD for NHS Trusts and the Department of Health.
