Steve started his academic career at Salford Business School in 1989, moving to UCLan in 1995. Prior to his academic career, Steve worked in the NHS in a variety of roles in planning and general management. He has teaching and research interests in health policy and management. Steve is also a  Research Degrees Tutor in the School.

Steve is research active within the area of business and management and is a member of the Institute for Research into Organisations, Work and Employment. He is also a member of the Health Research Methodology and Implementation Group.

Full Profile

Steve has 45 years’ work experience, 17 years of which in the NHS, and 28 years in academia. He has published 45 articles/ book chapters on health policy, leadership, and management topics. He has successfully supervised 3 PhD students to completion, (1 of whom is now a Professor); and acted as internal or external examiner for 7 research students.  He is currently co-supervising 4 DBA students.

He has been a reviewer for many journals including British Dental Journal, British Journal of General Management, Health Services Management Research, British Journal of Healthcare Management and a reviewer for grant awarding bodies such as ESRC.

 Steve has also acted as Principal Investigator for 2 NHS- funded research projects looking at the implementation of medical leadership in primary care settings.

Steve’s research output has been returned in the last four national research assessment exercises (RAE and REF) ie 1996, 2001, 2008, 2013.

He has substantial experience of designing, delivering and leading NHS specific management programmes, including leadership courses for junior and senior doctors, nurses, managers, and allied health professionals. Steve has also delivered short courses/ CPD for NHS Trusts and the Department of Health.
