Thanos has extensive experience in the field of environmental microbiology, with research focusing on the microbial ecology of polluted environments and biotransformations of metals.
Thanos obtained his PhD from the University of Sheffield, before working as a postdoctoral researcher in Geomicrobiology at the University of Manchester. During these years, he participated in multidisciplinary projects, which investigated the diversity of microbial communities and their contribution to various biogeochemical processes, including bioremediation of organic contaminants, biotransformations of metals and radionuclides, and mobilisation of arsenic. He has experience with culture-based and molecular microbiology techniques, including high throughput DNA sequencing and metagenomics. After a short term post as a Lecturer in Microbiology at Manchester Metropolitan University, Thanos joined UCLan in September 2016.
