Full Profile

David Alker is an artist working across a range of media including text, painting and installation. His work engages with diverse contexts including film, art history and music.

He has devised a process of making work in which the artwork closely mirrors an aspect of the original source material raising questions of authorship and authenticity. This has resulted in an investigative practice which encompasses objects, texts and environments based on historical sites and documentary material.

He has also has worked as part of a collaboration with artist Peter Liddell since 1998. Their projects featuring reconstructions of historic sites include ‘The Last Futurist Exhibition’, and ‘Mondrian’s Studio.’ The process of reconstruction based on documentary material has been central to their research methodology.

Alker and Liddell’s Record Collections engage with social and historical structures outside of the gallery context. Part of their strategy has been to make work which can exist equally in the worlds of music and art. Recently Alker and Liddell have been working with Beggars Banquet Records on incorporating images of their work onto two new album releases by seminal Manchester band The Fall. These were released in 2010 and 2011.

More publications

Project One
To examine the relationship between visual art practice and rock music, and in particular the canon of work produced by the Fall 1977-2009. The project explores the extent to which aspects of design, in this case album covers, re-contextualise and historicize ‘live’ performance elements.

Project Two
To examine the role of reconstruction and quotation in art practice as a way of connecting the historical and the contemporary. To what extent can reconstructed elements taken from artworks be said to exist independently of their original context?

Project Three
How do parallel narratives work within the context of contemporary film? The project examines the links between the use of language in contemporary art and film by employing elements of screenplays to reconstruct episodes from the horror genre.
