David is an enthusiastic biomedical scientist with diverse interests. He is fascinated by host pathogen interactions and microbial ecology, with experience from working as a medical microbiologist in the NHS and in a variety of roles in global biotechnology business provides insight into the skills needed to succeed in the public and private sectors. David is a supportive tutor with high expectations that will help his students succeed and achieve their potential.
David is new to the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, but is an old friend of UCLan. He worked for 22 years in the NHS as a registered Biomedical Scientist with specialist expertise in clinical diagnostic microbiology. During a part of that time he was working in the Public Health Laboratory Service investigating communicable disease and developing skills in epidemiology. David ran the Campylobacter Reference Laboratory and worked with collaborators around the world to understand the ecology of the organism and the epidemiology of campylobacter infection, during this time he gained his PhD at UCLan.
David joined a small Norwegian company to develop rapid microbial diagnostics using immunomagnetic separation and setup a research facility at UCLan in 2001. Through multiple acquisitions by increasingly larger companies and transfer to the science of tissue transplantation he became Business Manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, travelling extensively, for the global biotech giant ThermoFisher. Along the way David gained experience in product development, sales, technical support and marketing and he learned most of all that change brings opportunity and you must be open to new ideas.
David left the corporate environment to concentrate on education and gained a PGCE via distance learning through Leeds Beckett University and a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status from Ripley Teaching School Alliance before joining UCLan in July 2018.
He is a supportive tutor with high expectations that will help you convert your hard work to success and to achieve your potential. As the former US President Thomas Jefferson said, “I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it”.
