Medicine Summer School

You will be expected to travel to and from the start and end point of Preston either independently or with assistance from a parent, a UK-based guardian or chaperone service. We will provide onward travel to Westlakes Campus as part of the programme as well as return travel back to Preston. You'll also get the opportunity to visit our Preston Campus and tour the facilities on the day of arrival.

Preston has excellent transport links to Manchester International Airport via road and rail links. The fee does not include travel to and from the UCLan Preston Campus.

Our schedule will include:

• Clinical skills
  - Communication skills with simulated patients
  - Physical examination
  - Airways workshop
  - Suturing and venepuncture workshop
  - Basic life support (BLS) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training
• Introduction to Anatomy and practical workshop
• Virtual patient scenarios using VR technology
• Introduction to professionalism
• Personal statement advice and feedback
• Mock Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) and feedback session
• Visit to a Mountain Rescue Centre
• Evening guest lectures
• Hear from a former UCLan medical student and qualified staff
• Tour of the School of Medicine

You'll take part in an exciting social programme including:

• Guided visits within the local area
• Excursions to local tourist attractions
• BBQ evening
• Celebration evening including an award ceremony

All applicants must

• Be in their 12th or 13th year of education (e.g. 1st or 2nd year of A Level/IB)
• Be aged 16-18 for the duration of the summer school
• Be able to evidence a level of English language competency that will enable you to fully participate in the summer school, regardless of your nationality or country of residence. Equivalent to iGCSE Grade B / GCSE Grade 5, as a minimum.

• Private health/travel insurance is a condition of attendance (if you're an international student)
• Participants must secure their own travel visas if necessary and as required

UK-based guardian for under 18s

If you are under 18 at the start of the programme, your place is subject to the completion of the Under-18 Student Form with signatures from your parent/guardian and a nominated UK-based guardian.

Where the parents of an international student remain abroad, and there is no relative or family friend in the UK who can be appointed guardian by the student’s parents, the University requires that the student provide details of a guardian based in the UK. Preferably this should be someone who is in or near to the University. The guardian should be an adult who the University can contact in case of emergency and can act in loco parentis.

• All staff are DBS checked and trained in safeguarding
• There will be two Safeguarding Leads who will be trained to Level 3 in Safeguarding: one will be responsible for day cover and the other for overnight
• All students will be supervised throughout the Summer School and will have their own personal single en-suite bedroom with secure key card access
• Staff will be available on site at the accommodation at Summergrove Hall and students will be registered each evening
