What is intercalation?
Intercalation allows medicine students to take a year out of their course to complete a postgraduate degree. This is a unique opportunity to explore a scientific specialism of interest. This will enhance your research, critical-thinking and academic writing skills. Intercalated degrees provide a valuable insight and experience into academic medicine.

Who can apply?
Intercalation is open to medicine students in their fourth year of study. Both UK and international students can apply.
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) internship is only open to students at the University of Central Lancashire. Students from other universities can still apply for intercalation.
How is it funded?
There are 10 intercalation places which are fully funded by The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). These places are only open to medicine students at the University of Central Lancashire.
The NIHR internship will cover:
- Tuition fees at the UK rate (international students will need to top this up)
- Living allowance (at the standard rate)
- Bench fees
