Founded in 1859, the School has always fostered a tradition of excellence in art and design that continues to this day. With an extensive range of art, fashion and design courses, excellent facilities and guided by expert teaching staff, our students are encouraged to develop their natural talents into a competitive skillset that can provide a foundation for a successful career.
UCLan prides itself on producing industry leaders and the impact of the School and its students falls well beyond the campus limits. The high-quality, professional work completed within the School is recognised by real-world businesses who regularly commission live projects from its courses.
Our Architecture degree courses have professional recognition, including MArch Architecture, BSc (Hons) Architecture and BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology. We have newly-expanded workshops and studios with individual study spaces, and our courses are amongst the few to have an in-school design resource centre. Students have the opportunity to travel overseas to visit practices, sites and buildings and one of our recent graduates was shortlisted for the RIBA President’s Medal Bronze Award.
With long-established degrees, Design courses at UCLan have an established heritage and philosophy of ‘creative thinking’ that is embedded into our curriculum. Our staff are practising designers who offer a wide variety of industry knowledge and experience; benefiting our students with live briefs and work placements. Students have their own workspace within Victoria Building, which houses all design facilities and studios. Our students are regular and frequent winners in many national and international competitions.
UCLan has a long history in teaching Fashion degrees. Our students frequently win awards at events such as Graduate Fashion Week; we maintain a reputation as one of the most successful UK universities in the event’s history. Courses are housed in Victoria Building where all facilities are located and which provides a creative ‘home’ for our Fashion and Design students. We have strong links with industry-leading names, ensuring our graduates have excellent prospects for their placements, live briefs and employment.
Fine Art degree courses at UCLan cover many disciplines, including sculpture; painting; time-based media; book production; and printmaking. Teaching is based in Hanover Building, where there is more studio space than at any competitor institution. We have a strong studio culture, and practical work is supported by a wide range of specialist technical support and facilities. Staff comprise internationally-recognised artists with a broad range of expertise; their international profile provides students with access to vital artist networks.
With innovative teaching and close links to arts industries, the School offers an excellent environment for creative minds, with a range of courses:
