UCLan Research Centre in Engineering

engineering innovation centre

The UCLan Research Centre in Engineering pursues research and knowledge transfer over a wide range of topics in engineering. Strategic developments in the Centre are focussed on six contemporary areas to respond directly to significant priorities in contemporary society and elements of the UK Industrial Strategy. These activities are focused within a range of specialist research centres detailed at the links in the table below.

Autonomy and systems integration

Civic Drone Centre (Aerospace, UAVs) (CDC)

Digital manufacturing

Centre for Advanced Digital Manufacturing Technology (ADMT)

Centre for Applied Signal and Image Processing (ADSIP)

Intelligent machines and maintenance

Jost Institute for Tribotechnology (Tribology, intelligent machine elements) (JIfT)

John Tyndall Institute (Energy, simulation, etc.) (JTI)

Artificial intelligence and data analysis

Computer Vision and Machine Learning group (Data analytics and bio-medical imaging) (CVML)

Clean growth

Centre for Sustainable Transitions (CST)

Centre for Waste Management (CWM)

Centre for Fire and Explosion Studies

Innovation Clinic

UCLan’s motto is “Innovative thinking for the real world” and the Centre responds to this by conducting interdisciplinary research and knowledge transfer to address industrial problems through the joint efforts of both academics and research students. Combining practical experience with education in this way allows us to develop regional capability and capacity as well as the “leaders of tomorrow”.

Activities are based across our campuses in Preston and Burnley and include work in the recently completed £30m “Engineering innovation Centre” which houses many state-of-the-art facilities including equipment for 3D printing, drone technology and artificial intelligence.

The role of the UCLan Research Centre is to manage, support and further stimulate strategic development and growth of research and knowledge transfer, supporting industry in addressing regional, national and global challenges.

To discuss how the UCLan Research Centre in Engineering can help you to address your challenge, please contact the Centre Director, Professor Ian Sherrington on 01772 893322 or email isherrington@uclan.ac.uk .
