Are you a Postgraduate Professional (PGP) who is ambitious and wants to develop your authentic leadership persona to lead from the front confidently and competently? Study this course module by module at PG Certificate or PG Diploma level or achieve an MSc in Medical Leadership (ML). The ML program will equip you to lead your team in the executive arena. Discover and capitalise on your unique leadership strengths and style to maximise your leadership legitimacy to improve your team performance.

The course combines diverse, commercial know-how and internationally recognised self-assessment tools to help you develop best practice.

The ML foundation module (MB4300) provides a toolkit to help you establish the baseline of your leadership strengths and style, and your NHS competency level to lead from the front to move up the career ladder.

Once you have completed the foundation module, you can cherry pick your next module - focusing on your personal interests, professional and organisational needs, and the skills you require to succeed in Senior Leadership.

To exit with a PG Certificate in ML or PG Diploma in ML, you must have completed two modules of the seven on offer. If you have done other leadership modules with another university or modules with Health Education NW please contact jsamson1@uclan.ac.uk to discuss.

What you'll do

The ML foundation enables PGPs to establish a baseline of their unique strengths, style, role competency and organisational priority in the context of their sphere of practice. The culture of the programme is to foster positive collaborative peer groups, and build the foundations of the academic toolkit and skill for successful postgraduate assessment attainment.
In each ML module PGP's will drive innovation in leading self, leading with their team and developing the key senior leadership skill sets that are essential to the NHS leadership competency framework driving towards the exemplary level.
Study at your own pace, putting new skills into practice with the support of your peers and the academic team before moving on to the next stage. Benefit from multi-professional learning in small groups of six per module. Study a flexible programme that allows for four exit awards.

Pathways

All ML modules are at a level 7.
The foundation Module MB4300 is compulsory. You can study this as part of your ML PG Certificate pathway or ML PG Diploma pathway.
To achieve an exit award in ML you must complete two modules with us.
There are six optional modules to cherry pick from once you have completed the foundation module.
You are required to have been successful at the PG Diploma level before undertaking the MSc Medical Leadership.
We offer an additional modules to compliment the ML suite to enable PGPs to capture and gain academic credit for Work Based Learning projects or Continuous Professional Development. Then cherry pick the module/ skill set you need to grow to deliver SLT leadership skillset bespoke for your development and your organisational need. The Medical Leadership modules provide a supportive and clear framework for ambitious PGPs to lead with confidence and competence.

Are you a career climber, looking to develop a portfolio career then the Medical Leadership modules will enable you to evidence leadership and management training with application to practice. From those who have embarked on their foundation program/ core training the program is an ideal introduction. For the more experienced who are currently working at CESR or CCT senior levels the program offers support for Director level job applications and a refresher to support annual appraisal.

It’s essential to demonstrate how you are developing your leadership capability at any stage as you move up the career ladder. The behaviours and standards, outlined by the GMC are designed specifically for UK-based medical professionals from all specialties, career stages and across all sectors involving health and social care The Medical Leadership modules enable you to do just that.

Modules are delivered using a range of methods including live online conference calls, asynchronous and live discussion, recorded lectures, and small peer group learning groups.

Two-hour video calls are scheduled every 1-3 weeks, giving you time to digest, implement and reflect on your new know-how throughout each module.

Peer-to-peer group work, peer-led feedback and positive support from your group leader will help you to develop leadership skills and proficiencies as you progress through the course.

Bite-sized pieces of work will enable you to build up a whole picture of your sphere of practice in relation to each module. You’ll be assessed on these in order to demonstrate that you’ve achieved the learning outcomes from each module.

Oral exams (viva) are your opportunity to share, appraise, synthesise and evaluate your learning from a module.

The ML program facilitators have many years of working within Health and social care and commercial sectors both in the UK and Internationally. Core expertise centres in Organisational Development, organisational / executive and team transformational leadership.

Using the course content as your lens you will develop your authentic leadership persona and focus on both organisational and personal goals to successfully deliver the learning outcomes of the course and your goals.

Learn in a small cohort of no more than 6 with fellow high potentials learning step by step.

As a course leader Jane Samson is genuinely interested and invested in your unique leadership journey with multiple opportunities to focus on this 1-1 over the course for support.

The course was developed with UK medical colleagues, and informed by successful executive and team leadership projects across many industries internationally.

The curriculum for the Medical Leadership course is aligned with the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management Standards (2016). (As per bulletted list) The curriculum is also mapped to the GMC Leadership & Management for all doctors (2012); General Medical Council Generic Professional Capabilities Framework (2017) and the Healthcare Leadership Model (2013), and builds on, the GMC guidance on Leadership and management standards for medical professionals.

The GMC have set out the behaviours needed for medical leadership and management practice across the UK health sector. These standards are designed specifically for UK-based medical professionals from all specialties, career stages and across all sectors involving healthcare. They include:

Self-awareness and self-development
Personal resilience, drive and energy
Being a team player or team leader with the ability to work with nested teams
Building corporate culture and innovation
Designing and implementing systems leadership
