New students settle into life on campus

New arrivals to the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) didn’t let torrential rain spoil the mood as they arrived on campus to start to their life in Preston yesterday.

Circus acts, bands, a string quartet and a DJ were among the entertainment acts on display as thousands of students collected the keys and moved into their halls of residence on Sunday.

Help to move those essentials into their rooms came from a variety of sources including the University’s volleyball, rugby union, hockey, American football and cheerleading teams.

The fun continued into the evening in the Students’ Union where the newcomers enjoyed a range of events including live music, games, inflatables and a barbeque.

"Welcome Sunday is always an exciting and emotional day for new students and parents. It may have been raining, but we still gave everyone a very warm welcome"

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mike Thomas spent the day walking round the Preston Campus meeting new students and their families.

He said: “Welcome Sunday is always an exciting and emotional day for new students and parents. It may have been raining, but we still gave everyone a very warm welcome and it was lovely to see so many new enthusiastic people arrive at the University to begin their journey with us. The whole day was a testament to the commitment and professionalism of our staff and students.”

Activities during the upcoming Welcome Week include a Freshers’ Ball, welcome meals, a selection of fairs and a pop-up cinema before teaching starts on 24 September.
