His Honour Judge Mark Brown visited UCLan to discuss his role as county’s lead judge

The lead judge in Lancashire has shared his life story with law students and staff at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

His Honour Judge Mark Brown, who is the senior circuit and resident judge at Preston Crown Court, visited the city centre campus to discuss his long career in the law.

Speaking in the University’s moot court room, he said: “I was very pleased to have the opportunity of visiting the University, that has such an important place in the city, and speaking to students who are the next generation of lawyers.

“The legal profession is a wonderful but challenging career and I have enjoyed my time as a barrister enormously. One of the keys to success is hard work and determination but it is also important to have strong and lasting professional friendships. It was Shakespeare in Taming the Shrew who wrote, ‘As so do as adversaries at law, always strive mightily but eat and drink as friends’.”

I was delighted to speak about some of my experiences in the law and hope this might inspire students to endeavour to follow a similar career path

Judge Brown added: “I was delighted to speak about some of my experiences in the law and hope this might inspire students to endeavour to follow a similar career path.”

In addition to his duties of trying the most serious cases in the county, Judge Brown is also responsible for the court’s administrative duties.

Jane Anthony, Dean of the Lancashire Law School, commented: “We were delighted to welcome His Honour Judge Brown to the University. He was very engaging and offered a great insight into what a career in the law entails.”

Robert Webb, the High Sheriff of Lancashire, was also in attendance.
