Madeleine wins industry prize after return to study

A student who made a mid-life career swap after she was made redundant has been handed a marketing industry award at her university graduation ceremony.

Madeleine Melling, a 45-year-old former local government worker, has returned to study after 20 years and received the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) prize for Best Masters Student from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

Madeleine received a distinction for her MSc Marketing Management degree at UCLan and focused on the fashion industry’s portrayal of women over 50 for her dissertation.

The Chorley resident said: “I felt a lot of fashion brands didn’t understand the mature market so I wanted to investigate that. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my studies and am so pleased to win this award.

“I literally finished work one Friday after 20 years and began my Masters course on the Monday so it’s been quite a rollercoaster of a year but I don’t regret a minute of it.”
