Student wins prize for excellence

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has awarded another graduate from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) with a gold medal for excellence during her course.

Rebecca Ford, who completed her diploma in orthodontic therapy at UCLan in 2017, beat off competition from students from four other universities to win the Orthodontic Gold Medal Award, which is handed out annually to the most outstanding student taking the course in the UK that year.

The 27-year-old said: “Completing the orthodontic therapy course alone was a great achievement. However, receiving the news that I had been awarded the medal for my year was an amazing feeling. A special mention must go to my mentor, Dr Chris Baillie; I couldn't have done it without him.”

"receiving the news that I had been awarded the medal for my year was an amazing feeling."

Currently working as an orthodontic therapist in both the NHS and privately, Rebecca has followed in the footsteps of three other fellow graduates; Elizabeth Fear, Paula Reed and Sophie Gannon who won the award in 2017, 2015 and 2013 respectively.

Rebecca added: “The staff at UCLan were extremely helpful and went above and beyond to ensure we felt confident in our work and really did get the best out of each student.  We had access to information online and each mentor was only an email away if we needed advice or help when we were not at the campus.

“I feel very confident in saying that if I were to redo the entire experience again UCLan would still be my number one choice of study.”
