From clicks to coffee: the everyday contracts governing your daily life

28 November 2024

Free public event to explore the legal agreements we sign up to without even realising

A free public talk at the University of Central Lancashire will share how we enter into everyday legal contracts, often without noticing, and how we can resolve disputes that may arise from them.

From Clicks to Coffee: The Everyday Contracts Governing Your Daily Life, will take place at the Preston Campus on Thursday 5 December from 6.00pm – 7.30pm.

It is open to anyone interested in learning about the pivotal role law plays in everyday life.

Law lecturer Utkarsh Leo, who will lead the talk, said: “From buying coffee to ordering pizza, or signing a lease and taking out a loan, contracts are part of our daily lives. But have you ever stopped to ask—what exactly is a contract? How is it different from a simple promise?

“More importantly, why do contracts work even when we enter into business relationships with people outside our trusted inner circle?

“This is where the law steps in. The law builds trust and provides a safety net when contractual commitments are not fulfilled. And it’s not just about judges and courtrooms anymore. Today, disputes are often resolved outside of court through arbitration and mediation—where successful dispute resolution can result in the creation of new contracts.

“Above all, here’s something to think about: no real-world contract is ever truly complete. That’s why the law plays such a vital role in addressing challenges as they arise. Curious to learn more? Join me for the talk.”

The event will take place in Foster Lecture Theatre Three, Foster Building, on Thursday 6 December from 6.00pm – 7.30pm.

It is free but people are asked to register via Eventbrite.
