Sports commentator shares expert advice with UCLan students

Well-known BBC Radio 5 Live commentator John Murray has given top industry tips to students at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) looking to break into broadcast journalism.

John, who regularly commentates on the flagship 3.00pm football fixture for 5 Live, met both undergraduate and postgraduate journalism students at the University to speak about his 20 year radio career and the art of football commentary.

“A journalist’s attitude is more important than anything else."

The broadcaster has covered two World and four European football competitions for the BBC and provided the BBC radio commentary for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games.

Speaking to students in UCLan’s radio studio John said: “A journalist’s attitude is more important than anything else. The broadcasting landscape is completely different to when I started my career but having a good attitude is something that has endured and makes a broadcaster stand out.”
