Job details

The University of Central Lancashire has been transforming lives since 1828, and not only for students but our colleagues too, as confirmed by 84% who recently said in our staff survey that they are ‘proud to work for UCLan’. We strive to provide a positive working environment, offering opportunities for colleagues to thrive while we deliver a fantastic student experience, research and innovation, business engagement and enterprise.

About the role:

The Study Support and Skills Adviser role will provide study skills to students to enhance their academic performance, with a focus on improving student retention, completion, degree attainment and graduate outcomes within our recently formed Student Achievement Service.

This role provides an opportunity to make a real difference, helping deliver targets in our institutional Student Opportunity and Success Strategy and Access and Participation Plan (APP).

This is a varied role working closely with key stakeholders across the University and Students’ Union, including student support teams, academic colleagues, and our students. You will help students develop study skills and strategies for success by providing one-to-one or small group sessions.

You will work closely with the Head of Student Achievement and the wider Student Achievement Services teams.

About you:

As a Study Support & Skills Adviser, you will have:

  • Experience of delivering academic guidance and support to individuals or groups with an understanding of the challenges and barriers faced by different groups of students, particularly those who are under-represented in higher education.
  • Effective one-to-one advisory skills, with the ability to deliver well planned and engaging sessions to groups of students.
  • Good honours degree or equivalent experiential learning.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential to explain complex concepts, provide constructive feedback, and maintain effective communication with students.

Applicants need to meet all essential criteria on the person specification to be considered for interview. This position will be expected to support students at both our Preston and Burnley campuses, and the post holder will be expected to work at our Burnley campus one day per week.
