Therapeutic Work with Children & Adolescents

This course aims to provide a therapeutic base for professionals who are working with children and adolescents. It will provide both the strategies and the underpinning theory for working with children and adolescents appealing to all professionals in this sector, e.g. teachers, counsellors, nursery nurses, social workers, youth workers etc.

The course supports employability and career development in these fields. The theory will include developmental trauma, attachment theory and the theoretical background to therapeutic play as well as an opportunity to practice skills in therapeutic play and other appropriate interventions. The course is suitable for CPD and carries 20 credits at the postgraduate level in Counselling/Psychotherapy and other areas.

Course overview

The module is part-time, delivered via blended learning (ie, online/on-site) and so is particularly suited to those in employment. It carries twenty credits at Level 7, which can contribute to further study at Level 7. It covers:

Child and adolescent development, including attachment theory and developmental trauma.
The theoretical background to therapeutic play and practical methods of working with children and adolescents including skills work.
Safeguarding, legal and ethical issues involved in working with children and adolescents.

Entry requirements

First Degree in a related field and/or a Graduate Diploma in Counselling or equivalent.
Fluent oral and written English required.

This course is 24 taught hours over one semester: four months including assessments.

The course runs under a blended learning format: in place of physical on-site attendance on two of the four days, students will engage in student-centred reading/learning activities plus active participation in an online discussions forum and workshops. At least one of these online workshops will be synchronous, that is, on a specified day/time, over 2 hours in the evening, delivered via a virtual learning environment. The remaining two days will be delivered on-site 9 am-5 pm and will involve incorporating the theoretical approaches explored in the online sessions into a practical, skills-based model, working alongside other participants.

A diverse range of learning and teaching strategies will be used including seminars, group discussion, case studies and case discussion experiential exercises, lectures. The experiential exercises will follow Kolb's Learning cycle.

Assessment

There are two assignments: a negotiated essay on a related topic and a case study or a critique of a relevant research paper.
