Return to Midwifery Practice

The course’s aims are to assist the midwife who has had a break in practice to be accountable and safe to be returned to the professional register. The programme of study will complement and support the clinical placement.

All aspects of midwifery care will be examined in the light of research, changing client needs and service provision. Candidates will study recent legislative changes and contemporary issues in midwifery practice in addition to a revision of skills in both theory and practice. Successful candidates will be awarded a Certificate in Midwifery Studies which could be counted as two modules at Level 2 towards a Diploma in Midwifery Studies or a BSc (Hons) in Midwifery Studies.

Course overview

Core session will cover contemporary clinical and professional issues enabling the student to appreciate changes that have taken place within clinical practice and professional thinking. Choice sessions will be in line with identified learning needs by the student.

The student may be involved with seminars, workshops, student-centred learning, workbooks, lectures and group discussion. Students will be required to attend 80 per cent of the course.

A 3,000 word assignment at the completion of their course plus all clinical placement documentation and fulfilment of the LSA requirements. Completion of the course results in the student’s name submission for return to the midwifery register.

As part of the course you will have the opportunity to hear about the experiences of service users, carers, patients and public members via our community engagement and service user support groups (Comensus).
