ODPs, Nurses, Assistant Practitioners and Nurse Associates who undertake the role of scrub practitioner during surgery

Course Content

Course Outline:
Non-technical skills are the behavioural attributes of communication, teamwork and task management and the cognitive attributes of situational awareness and decision making. Their effective use by the surgical team is essential for enhancing patient safety during surgery. Despite their contribution to practice, most scrub practitioners do not undertake any formalised training to develop these skills. This workshop will assist scrub practitioners to develop knowledge of the contribution of these skills towards safer patient care.

Guy McClelland

Guy McClelland is a senior lecturer on the BSc (Hons.) in Operating Department Practice programme. He has undertaken research that explored the factors that affect scrub practitioner non-technical skills during surgery.

Learning outcome & aims

By the end of the workshops participants will:

- Develop awareness of the contribution of non-technical skills during surgery to safer patient care
- Develop awareness of strategies that enhance the use of non-technical skills during surgery by scrub practitioners

We have great links with employers including household names such as Sony, BAE Systems and Apple. We also have links with the smaller companies in the region and offer help and assistance to more than 1,000 of these – with many of our graduates staying in the region it is important we develop these relationships.
