This course is for anyone who wants to pursue a career in the public sector. Covering in detail both the nature of public services, and the contemporary issues and challenges facing public services in the 21st Century, this will ground you in how public services are run, funded, developed and delivered. Alongside experience-based teaching, the course brings in many of challenging and knowledgeable outside speakers from a range of public sector settings. Practitioners, senior managers, voluntary representative and others, they provide insights that will challenge you to think differently about modern day public services.
To further prepare you for a career in public sector work, the course includes extensive personal development, helping you understand and develop your own skills as a public sector professional. Developing up your own portfolio, you will have worked on improving you own capabilities as a professional within the public sector.

The course is a mix of three key elements. Firstly, in-depth learning about the nature of contemporary public services, leading to a detailed understanding of how public services are organised, funded and delivered. In this section a critical perspective is taken that will challenge students to think deeply about the current and future state of public service in the UK. Secondly the current challenges facing public services are considered: central to this element is a wide range of external speakers who will offer challenging, real-world perspectives based on their own experiences of delivering public services. Thirdly the course includes extensive personal and practice development, where students are enabled to develop their workplace skills in relevance to their own professional experience and practice. This will also enhance the student’s workplace experience and professional skills by enabling them plan their career to match their personal skills, abilities and achievements with potential career paths with their current and potential employers.
Assessment will include both academic assignments and the development of a personal portfolio.
The course leader, Dr. David Hanley, who delivers MD4069 (Public Sector Organisations and Environment) and MD4070 (Public Sector Strategy and Partnership) working spent thirty years in public service, both as a practitioner and as a manager, including extensive experience at senior management levels. With experience in the NHS, Adult Social Services, Housing Strategy, Partnership Working, Adult Safeguarding and voluntary sector experience, Dr. Hanley uses his direct experience alongside academic teaching to deliver a challenging programme of learning.

This course is targeted people working (or seeking to work) in public services, to enhance their career prospects by widening their knowledge and understanding of the public sector. The course will benefit both people at the start of their public career who want to develop an in-depth understanding of the sector, and those with existing experience who want to take the opportunity to reflect and develop further their understanding, as well as further developing their personal and professional skills.
