Why study this course?

Foundation Entry degree courses are designed for students who have the ability to study for a degree, but don’t have the necessary formal qualifications to enter directly onto their chosen Honours degree programme. Expand your expertise with the technical depth and project work experience you need to progress further in an electronic engineering career on our MEng degree programme. The extra year’s study leads to a deeper understanding of the subject and its real-world application. You’ll get the chance to work on a wider range of projects, including group work that could involve our professional partners and collaborators - BAE Systems, NASA, the NHS and the Northwest Aerospace Alliance, among others. And just as importantly, you’ll develop a range of transferable skills, like teamwork, decision-making, delegation, identifying and solving problems, and communication - all skills employers prize.

Entry Requirements

Our typical offer is 72 UCAS Points. We operate a flexible admissions policy and treat everyone as an individual. This means that we will take into consideration your educational achievements and predicted grades (where applicable) together with your application as a whole, including work experience and personal statement. UCLan requires all undergraduate applicants to have a minimum attainment of five GCSEs at grade C and above, or equivalent, (including Maths and English). In 2017 and beyond we will view the new Grade 4 as being equivalent to a C grade and will therefore require students to achieve GCSE Grade 4 or above. However, if the subject is relevant to our degree programme and requires a higher GCSE grade (e.g. GCSE B grade), and/or includes a Professional body that governs the entry requirements, Grade 5 or above may be required.

The MEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering course aim is to develop graduates with a broad understanding of current technology and practice in electronic engineering, covering the relevant aspects of analogue and digital electronic systems and additional specialist areas according to the option modules studied.

The discipline of electronic engineering encompasses a wide skills base and the emphasis of this course is placed on electronic system design rather than that of individual component devices. By concentrating on the principles fundamental to system level design, the course equips graduates with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in the rapidly evolving field of electronic engineering and the transferrable skills to find employment in a diverse set of industrial and commercial sectors.

On the MEng(Hons) Electronic Engineering course, you will study various aspects of the subject, including analogue and digital electronic systems, microprocessor-based and microcontroller-based systems, signal processing, and software development. The course includes option modules enabling you to select specialist topics according to your interests and aspirations, tailoring your programme of study to your own requirements. Each student undertakes two individual projects and a final-year group project.

Course content is informed by our links with the Applied Digital Signal & Image Processing (ADSIP) Research Centre, research-active in areas including non-destructive evaluation, medical data analysis and computer vision.

Getting the opportunity to get involved with things outside of the classroom is the best thing about being a student in UCLan. I have been an ambassador for engineering going into schools to promote engineering, was an exhibitor at the Lancashire Science Festival, and had real engineering project experience working on new and exciting technology for a local entrepreneur. Also, I have been sponsored by UCLan to travel on an all-expenses-paid internship to the United States of America and contribute to space research with NASA. Apart from the excellent laboratory and testing environment, learning programming and software development, the analogue electronics module and engineering practice modules, were the most useful to me on my project in the US. The internship involved building and testing low frequency radio receivers with staged amplifier circuits. The international experience was good fun and has really broadened my horizons.

You can benefit from industrial sponsorship. You would typically work full time in a junior engineering position at a local company while studying part time.

Professional Accreditation

The BEng course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). The MEng course has been submitted for accreditation, expected on completion of the first cohort.

Learning Environment and Assessment

A variety of teaching and learning methods  used, including traditional lectures, laboratory-based sessions using specialist facilities, computer sessions and simulations, tutorials, design exercises and directed study. The practical facilities are located in a purpose-built building with impressive computer facilities and dedicated laboratories.

Assessment uses formal examinations and coursework. The balance of assessment varies from module to module; a typical breakdown over the full course is in the range 60%-70% examination, 30%-40% coursework, exclusive of major individual project work. 


You will have the opportunity to undertake a year-long industrial placement before your final year. This will be a great opportunity for you to broaden your practical work experience and to consolidate your learning. The invaluable industry experience will also be of great benefit when you return to UCLan as well as giving you a significant advantage in your early career development.

There are opportunities for paid, real-world industrial experience working on ERDF funded commercial projects connected to local industry in the North West, and Summer Undergraduate Internships, working on actual research projects - we recently placed a student with NASA.

Successful completion of the industrial placement module is recognised by the endorsement “with industrial placement” in the award title.

UCLan has links with worldwide organisations, and can therefore arrange for work experience in the UK or abroad. Recent overseas placements include a 10 week NASA research experience for undergraduates programme. This is where a student from UCLan is paired with mentor at the University of Alabama specialising in theory, modelling, computer simulations, data analysis or instrument design to work on a summer research project in the US.

Engineering graduates are in greater demand than ever, which means the career options for you are varied. You could find yourself working in high value manufacturing - perhaps aerospace or the automotive industry - or in the Ministry of Defence, or in research and development. Careers in digital communications, consumer electronics, security and surveillance, as well as banking and commerce, are also open to graduates.

The majority of graduates embark on careers in high value manufacturing. A course module that will help you plan your career as an engineering professional is part of your degree programme. Opportunities for further study include a taught postgraduate MSc course in Renewable Energy Engineering. The School has significant research activity in this area and graduates can opt for an MSc, MPhil or PhD with the Applied Digital Signal and Image Processing (ADSIP) Research Centre, Advanced Digital Manufacturing Technology (ADMT) Research Centre or Centre for Power and Energy Management.


The course is fantastic and the teaching staff are innovative. The best thing is some of the recent, up to date content. The programming and technical authoring skills I learnt have been really useful for my graduate role. The fact that the UCLan course is accredited by the IET has helped me with my professional development because now my employers are sponsoring me to proceed with a Masters course so that I can complete my registration as a Chartered Engineer
